Lethbridge has a different shape from the rest of southern Alberta: two post-secondary institutions in the city hand out most of the money, and the community awards behind them are small, specific, and thinly applied for. Fourteen listings in the directory are scoped here. Two of them need you to have started building a case in Grade 10, so read to the end before you plan your year.
Start with the money that isn't a competition
Before any local award, take the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. It pays up to $2,500 for marks you already earned, every qualifying Alberta student who applies gets it, and it stacks with everything below. It is the floor, not the prize.
The two awards to start early
The Health Care Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship is the one students miss by finding it too late. Two of its four awards are reserved for graduating Grade 12 students, at $4,000 for first place and $3,000 for second, but you must be a registered AHS volunteer at Chinook Regional Hospital with at least 40 lifetime hours. Those hours are the gate, they are specific to that hospital, and they are not something you can accumulate in your graduating spring. Start in Grade 10 or 11. Health care is defined broadly here and is not limited to direct patient care roles. Applications are due at noon, not end of day.
The Aspiring Artist Award is open from Grade 9, earlier than almost anything else in the province, but it runs on nominations rather than applications. You cannot put yourself forward. If you make art seriously, the action item is to ask an art teacher or someone in the local arts community to nominate you, and to ask well before the deadline.
The University of Lethbridge, which is most of the money
Four separate awards, and the calendar matters more than the marks. Grade 12 students applying to ULethbridge are automatically considered for the Board of Governors Award at $1,000 with no separate application, and it runs off the December 15 early admission deadline, which is the earliest date on this page. Grade 11 students have their own route: the Grade 11 Merit Award pays $800 off a 75% average, submitted before June 30 of your Grade 11 year. Do not wait until Grade 12 to notice it, because by then you are looking at the Board of Governors award instead.
Above those sit the Chinook Scholarship at $5,000, which wants an 85% average, a reference letter, and full-time enrolment across both fall and spring, and the High School Entrance Awards worth up to $6,000, which are a pool of named scholarships with different criteria. Some weigh marks, others leadership, financial need, or artistic ability, and you apply through the Bridge student portal.
If you are heading to Lethbridge Polytechnic instead, one application reaches more than 400 awards worth over $800,000, and the same form is how Alberta residents apply for the Jason Lang and Louise McKinney provincial scholarships. That is the highest return per form filled in southern Alberta.
County and community awards
The Lethbridge County Community Benefit Scholarship gives two $2,000 awards to students entering a STEM program, closing June 1. The county runs it with the Stirling Wind Project and some lists name it the Stirling Wind Project Community Benefit Scholarship, so do not apply twice thinking they are separate awards. The Lethbridge County Bursary Program is listed at three $1,500 bursaries with financial need in the selection, but the county only advertises the Community Benefit Scholarship, so this may be the same award under an older name. Contact the County before applying to both.
The Lethbridge School Division ICE Scholarship rewards innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship for a division student who shows initiative and original problem-solving. Its 2026 window ran January 13 to April 29 and the division had not posted 2027 dates when this was checked, so those are rolled forward.
The Lethbridge and District Pro-Life Association runs two Grade 12 awards, the Elsie Alexander Essay Scholarship at $1,000 and the Work and Volunteer Scholarship at $500, and you can apply for both in the same year: one is decided on a written submission, the other on service. Their catchment is unusually wide, running north to Nanton and Vulcan, east to the Saskatchewan border, and south and west to the United States and British Columbia borders. The 2026 cycle has closed and no 2027 date was posted when this was checked, so there is nothing to plan against yet; the association announces reopening through its newsletter.
Arts and culture
The Ray Jolliffe Memorial Scholarship is worth $3,000 but narrower than it sounds. It is a behind-the-scenes theatre award, so the eligible programs are production design and management, or media production and design, rather than performance. The Allied Arts Council lists March 31 without tying it to a year, which suggests a fixed annual date. The Mac Nishiyama Memorial Scholarship is $500 from the Nikkei Cultural Society, but the society's two pages disagree on who can apply: the awards page says any southern Alberta high school graduate, while the about page describes it as being for students interested in Japanese language or culture. There is no published deadline or form, so email [email protected] and ask which applies before you spend time on it.
How to actually work the list
- Put December 15 in your calendar now. The ULethbridge early admission deadline carries the Board of Governors award with it, months ahead of everything else here.
- If healthcare is the plan, start volunteer hours this year. Forty lifetime hours at Chinook Regional Hospital cannot be backfilled in your final spring.
- One Polytechnic form reaches 400 awards. Fill it even if you are unsure, because it also carries Jason Lang and Louise McKinney.
- Apply to everything you plausibly qualify for. The arithmetic on local awards is heavily in your favour, and the county and arts awards here draw from small pools.
