A $70,000 national scholarship gets tens of thousands of applicants. A $1,000 award from a Medicine Hat service club might get twenty. Students chase the first kind and ignore the second, which is exactly backwards if the goal is money for school rather than a line for a resume.
The arithmetic
Suppose a national award pays $10,000 and draws 10,000 applicants, while a local award pays $1,000 and draws 25. The expected value of the national application is a dollar; the local one is forty. The local award also takes less time to apply for, and the same essay and reference letter usually work for several of them. Applying to five local awards is a few evenings of work with genuinely good odds; a national award is a long shot that costs a month.
This is not a reason to skip the big ones if you are a real candidate. It is a reason to never skip the small ones.
Why local committees are easier to win over
- They know your context. A national reader does not know your school or what it means to hold a job in a small town. A local committee does, and often knows your referee personally.
- They reward showing up. Many local awards go under-applied. Some years the applicant pool is in single digits. A complete, sincere application can win almost by arriving.
- They value ordinary evidence. Local committees read part-time jobs, farm work, coaching, and volunteering as the point, not as filler.
Where local awards hide
The catch: local awards are badly advertised. They live on photocopied sheets in guidance offices and outdated municipal webpages, which is the problem ScholarAB exists to fix. The usual sources:
- Your guidance office. Ask for the local awards list directly; some awards are only distributed through schools.
- City and county programs, like environmental and community bursaries.
- Service clubs: Rotary, Lions, Elks, Legion branches and their auxiliaries.
- Community foundations that administer dozens of small named funds.
- Employers and unions, both yours and your parents'. Co-op and credit-union memberships often carry student awards.

The strategy in one paragraph
Apply to the Rutherford because it is guaranteed money for marks you already have. Apply to every local award you plausibly qualify for, reusing one strong essay and one reference package. Add national awards on top only where you are genuinely competitive. Small awards stack, and $1,000 three times is a semester's tuition.
