Needs Grade 12 or post-secondary

Worth knowing

This one is decided inside your institution, not by a provincial committee. Your athletic department selects the recipients and pays them, so the person to ask is your team coach, not Alberta Student Aid, and there is no public deadline. You need to be in your second or subsequent term, which means a student starting in September can be selected in the winter term of first year. The bar is deliberately low at a 2.0 GPA and 60 percent of a full course load, and selection is split evenly between male and female athletes. Upgrading and college preparation students qualify after one term but only for a single year, and apprentices qualify after one period if they are progressing. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons. Applicants qualify as Alberta residents through a parent or guardian who lived permanently in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before their studies and now lives in Alberta, through their own last 12 consecutive months of residence immediately before study being in Alberta, or through a spouse or partner’s 12 consecutive months of Alberta residence before their studies. Two consecutive full-time terms at a designated post-secondary institution in an academic year are another qualifying route. A minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. You must study at an eligible publicly funded Alberta institution.
